Kulamba Ceremony Set To Unite Chewa People

The Chewa Heritage Foundation (CHEFO) says this year’s event Kulamba traditional ceremony of the Chewa people will take place on the 30 August.

Leader of the Chewa chiefs in Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique Senior Chief Lukwa has confirmed about the development in an interview.

Senior Chief Lukwa said organisers of the ceremony are on the ground to finalise all the necessary requirements.

“As usual, the ceremony will take place at Mkaika in Katete district, Eastern province of Zambia,” he said.

Senior Chief Lukwa said currently, CHEFO is in the process of soliciting funds from well-wishers to donate towards the course.

“We are calling on well-wishers to assist us both in cash and kind for us as CHEFO to be able to send delegates there,” said Senior Chief Lukwa.

He has since urged people to support the event, saying the ceremony will be unique.

“It will be the second ceremony to be conducted after it was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic which wracked havoc for several years,” he added.

The Kulamba Ceremony is a cultural event that brings together the Chewa people from Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique.

The ceremony is held to pay homage to Kalonga Gawa Undi, the supreme leader of the Chewa chiefdoms and features traditional dances, music and other customs.
