Avore Technologies Invents Bioplastic Packaging

A local biotechnology startup, Avore Technologies, has developed a cassava-based bioplastic packaging material designed to replace single-use plastics and reduce environmental pollution.

The company’s flagship product, branded ECOPAK, is made from cassava sourced from smallholder farmers and breaks down completely in under six months, enriching the soil instead of contaminating it.

Avore Technologies founder Emmanuel Matewere said the innovation was inspired by the devastating impact of plastic pollution on the environment, communities, and the economy.

“We wanted to reimagine packaging as something that coexists with nature reducing carbon emissions, eliminating waste and empowering farmers through an inclusive supply chain,” he said.

The company also produces paper packaging made from recycled materials as part of efforts to conserve resources and promote a circular economy.

“For us, sustainability is not just a buzzword it means reducing waste, conserving resources and making sure our products give back to the environment rather than take away from it,” he said.

Matewere said the company’s approach not only protects the environment but also supports farmers by creating stable markets for cassava and encouraging sustainable farming practices.

“By sourcing cassava locally, we are giving farmers a stable market and encouraging them to adopt more sustainable farming practices. It’s about protecting the environment and uplifting communities at the same time,” he said.

Avore’s eco-friendly packaging is targeted at businesses across multiple sectors, including food and beverage companies, retail shops, pharmacies and medium-sized enterprises.

Although slightly more expensive than conventional packaging, the company argues its products deliver long-term value in sustainability and brand reputation.

“We know our products may cost a little more upfront, but we remind businesses that sustainable packaging is an investment. It enhances brand image, reduces waste management challenges, and shows customers that a company is serious about the planet,” he said.

Looking ahead, Avore Technologies plans to expand its production capacity and product portfolio, with ambitions to establish itself as a leading provider of sustainable packaging in Malawi and beyond within the next five years.

“We see ourselves as a regional leader in the next five years, introducing more innovative products and working with global partners. Our mission is to show that Africa can lead in sustainable solutions,” said Matewere.

However, he admitted that scaling up production remains a major challenge due to limited machinery for mass bioplastic manufacturing.

Said Matewere: “Scaling is our biggest hurdle. We need the right equipment to produce in bulk, but we are making strategic moves to get there. That’s why we introduced recycled paper packaging to generate income that we can reinvest in bioplastic production.”

Matewere also issued a call to businesses to embrace change.

“The Earth is worth it and so is your brand. It’s time to rethink, redesign and repurpose. Join the sustainable packaging revolution and be part of building a better future,” he said.
