Senior Chief Theresa Kachindamoto of Dedza, Malawi, passed away on August 13, leaving behind a profound legacy as a champion for girls’ rights and a formidable force against child marriage.
Her journey from a secretary in Zomba to the Senior Chief of Dedza District in 2003 marked the beginning of a transformative era for her community and the nation.
Upon assuming leadership, Chief Kachindamoto was confronted with the harsh realities of child marriages in her district.
Determined to enact change, she annulled thousands of child marriages and dismissed sub-chiefs who failed to enforce the law, reinstating them only when they complied.
Her efforts provided countless girls with the opportunity to return to school and reclaim their futures.
Her advocacy extended beyond national borders. Chief Kachindamoto collaborated with international organizations, including the UN Women’s HeForShe campaign, demonstrating that traditional leaders could lead the fight for gender equality.
Her unwavering commitment earned her global recognition, including the Leadership in Public Life Award from Vital Voices in 2017 and an honorary doctorate from KU Leuven and UCLouvain in 2024.
Tributes have poured in from all corners of Malawi and beyond, reflecting the widespread impact of her work.
Former President Peter Mutharika remembered her as “a woman of gentle kindness; a towering figure in this country’s traditional leadership; and a champion for girls’ rights.”
He highlighted her pivotal role in advancing the 2015 Marriage, Divorce and Family Relations Act, which raised the minimum marriage age to 18, and her active enforcement of this law in her area.
Her dedication ensured that this law was not only passed but actively enforced, annulling thousands of child marriages and giving countless girls the opportunity to return to school.
Chief Kachindamoto’s influence reached all corners of Malawi. From rural villages to urban centers, people mourn her loss while celebrating a life that transformed the prospects of thousands of girls and inspired leaders across the world.
Her story is a reminder that one person, with vision and courage, can change an entire society. Senior Chief Theresa Kachindamoto leaves behind a legacy of justice, equality and hope that will continue to guide Malawi for generations to come.
The body of the late Senior Chief Kachindamoto will be raid to rest at her home village at Nkosini, Mtakataka, Dedza District today on August 16.
