Leeds Offer Malawi Netball Star New Contract

The roar of the crowd in Leeds will once again carry the name of Malawian goal shooter Joyce Mvula.

The Malawi National Netball Team shooter and fan favourite has confirmed her return to NIC Leeds Rhinos for the 2026 Netball Super League season.

Mvula, who made her international debut in 2010, has spent the last two seasons lighting up the court for the Rhinos, finishing as their top goal scorer in both campaigns.

In 2025, she netted an impressive 505 goals, the fifth highest tally in the entire league and was named Coaches’ Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Her scoring prowess and calm under pressure have made her a nightmare for defenders and a joy for fans.

Before joining the Rhinos, Mvula was a key figure in Manchester Thunder’s 2022 Vitality Superleague title triumph, later taking her talents to New Zealand’s Central Pulse.

Now entering her third season in Leeds, the Malawian star says the city has become her second home.

“I’m just happy for the opportunity and grateful. The Rhinos fans have been with us in hard times and good times. We love our fans and can’t wait to bring them entertaining games next season,” she said.

Head coach Lauren Palmer calls her re-signing “a massive boost” for the squad.

“She’s grown tremendously, physically stronger, more confident in her movement, and able to sink super shots with consistency. Beyond her performance on court, Joyce is an exceptional person who adds so much value to our environment,” said Palmer.

Mvula’s success is more than just an individual triumph. It is part of a larger narrative of Malawian athletes making their mark internationally.

For young athletes back home, Mvula’s journey from the courts of Lilongwe and Blantyre to international arenas is a story of resilience and possibility.

Her dedication, work ethic, and humble personality have made her a role model for aspiring players, proof that talent from a small nation can flourish with the right opportunities and mindset.
