In a quest to generate extra funds and achieve economic independence, government-owned Rumphi Teacher Training College has ventured into farming.
Officially opened in March 2024, the college is making strides in both crop and animal husbandry.
Rumphi Teacher Training College Principal, Wisdom Nkhoma has indicated that the college also decided to venture into the initiative to help generate funds that can be used to help needy students.
“As a college, we sat down to find alternative ways that can help us thrive economically and that’s when this idea came in,” he said.
Nkhoma said currently, the college has managed to construct several poultry houses which it is using to keep chickens.
He said currently, the poultry business is already generating profits that are being used to pay school fees for needy students.
“We are also using some of the funds to support their daily needs,” said Nkhoma.
The college has also used part of the poultry business profit to establish a banana farm.
“Through this farm, we are hoping to start supplying quality bananas to hundreds of customers across the country and beyond,” he added.
The college’s exploits have already caught the attention of Minister of Higher Education, Dr Jessie Kabwila who has described the move as a step in the right direction.
“If we can have several institutions doing what Rumphi T.T.C is doing, we can ably develop Malawi,” she said.
