President Urges Malawians to Respect Customs, Traditions

President Lazarus Chakwera has underlined the need for Malawians to continue respecting customs and traditions, highlighting their significance in fostering national cohesion and cultural identity.

Chakwera has also appeal to people in the country to respect other people’s traditions for unity and peace to thrive.

He made the remarks Saturday at Hora Heritage Centre in Mzimba during the 2025 Umthetho Festival.

Addressing thousands of people who gathered to witness the climax and conclusion of the three-day celebrations, the president underlined the need for people to embrace unity in diversity.

“We have different tribes in the country, including Ngoni, Tumbuka, Chewa, Yao, Lhomwe, Sena and many other cultural groups. All these groups have different customs and traditions. However, what unites us is the fact that we are all Malawians,” he said.

The Malawi leader also condemned the tendency of some quarters with misconception that cultural celebrations are a waste of time.

“Celebrations like this one are important because they remind us who we really are,” said Chakwera.

In his remarks, Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V thanked thousands of people who showed up for the festival, urging them to continue being pride of their culture.

“This festival is very important because through this function, we celebrate heritage, unity and pride among the Ngoni people,” said Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa.

The festival was spiced up by speeches, food and traditional dances performed by Ngoni people.
