Muslim Organisation Trains Phalombe Women In Tailoring

At least 200 women from Phalombe district have undergone a fashion and design training, thanks to a Muslim affiliated charity organisation called AQSA.

The organisation says it decided to train the women as one way of empowering them economically.

Abdul Razak Liwonde, a senior representative from the organisation has told ProjectM in an interview that through the initiative, the organisation also hopes to see the women become role models to fellow women.

“As an organisation, we didn’t want to just give the women free things but rather empower them with a skill because a skill will stick with them for many years,” he said.

The women, who were being trained under Mai Fatima Tailoring Centre in Phalomwe have on Sunday received materials to help them launch individual businesses.

“We have given them sewing machines to enable them launch a successful businesses,” said Liwonde.

Liwonde has since advised the beneficiaries to use the skill wisely.

“We don’t want to hear stories that others have started disrespecting their husbands because of this skill because that will be against our wishes,” he added.

One of the beneficiaries, Agnes Nkhwangwa has hailed AQSA for the training, saying it will help her become financially independent.

“What AQSA has done is wonderful and we urge them to do even more for other women out there,” she said.
