US-based Malawian forward Temwa Chawinga scored her ninth goal of the season on Friday night, helping Kansas City Current secure a 2-0 victory over Racing Louisville FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
The Malawian striker found the back of the net in the 65th minute after sprinting into the box to meet Michelle Cooper’s low cross, calmly slotting the ball past the Louisville goalkeeper.
The goal not only opened the scoring but also brought Temwa’s NWSL tally to 30, making her just the 15th player in league history to score 30 goals for a single club.
Kansas City doubled their lead eight minutes later through Elizabeth Ball, who scored her first goal of the 2025 season with a powerful header from a set piece.
The assist came from Vanessa Rodriguez, who now ties with Hailie Mace for the most regular-season assists in club history with nine.
Kansas City Current head coach Vlatko Andonovski praised Temwa’s consistency and impact on the pitch.
“Temwa continues to prove why she’s one of the most dangerous forwards in the league,” Andonovski said.
“Her movement, timing, and finishing are top-class. What’s even more impressive is her work ethic off the ball. She is a true team player and that goal tonight was another example of her clinical ability.”
Friday’s game also marked the return of Brazilian star Debinha, who made her first appearance in over two months. Debinha reached two personal milestones her 150th NWSL appearance overall, becoming the first Brazilian to do so, and her 50th league appearance for the Current.
With this result, the Kansas City Current not only cemented their position at the top of the NWSL table with 12 wins in 14 matches, but also extended their unbeaten run to seven games.
The team is now just four wins away from matching their franchise record for regular season victories.
Temwa, who is now just one goal behind the Golden Boot leader, continues to be a central figure in Kansas City’s title charge.
Following a record-breaking debut season last year in which she scored 21 goals and earned league MVP honors, she remains one of the league’s standout performers.
