Government Eyes Creative Industry for Economic Growth

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera made the remarks Thursday evening at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during a dinner he hosted in honour of local artists who are top recipients of the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) Blank Media Levy loyalties.

Speaking at the function, Chakwera said the creative sector remains a key component in developing the country’s economy.

He said other sectors, including tourism rely much on the creative industry to effectively thrive.

“I should mention it here that government regards the creative economy and tourism as both a critical component and strategic pillar of national prosperity,” he said.

The Malawi leader said if taken seriously, art has the ability to unite, heal and build a nation.

“Our plan as the government is to ensure that there is a very conducive environment for those in the creative industry to thrive,” said Chakwera.

Government has since revealed plans to build infrastructure across the country where artists can use for performances.

At the event, the President also honoured 12 musical and literature legends who have contributed more to the growth of the country’s creative sector.

Some of the artists include Giddes Chalamanda, Paul Banda, Walije Gondwe, Kay Chilomo, Grace Chinga, John Nyanga, Eric Mabedi, Bonface Ndamera, Dyson Gonthi, Wambali Mkandawire, Lucius Banda and DD Phiri.

During the event, President Chakwera also presented dummy cheques to artists who have generated more loyalties between April 2024 and March 2025 under the COSOMA Blank Media Levy system.

Some of the artists, include Eli Njuchi (K23.4 million), Driemo (K23.3 million) and Wikise (K10.3 million).
