In the bustling township of Chilomoni in Blantyre, a story of quiet determination and meaningful progress is unfolding.
It is the story of Blessings Maudzu Chapalapata, a 42-year-old woman who has found purpose, hope, and income through a business she never imagined she could run. It all started with a simple training opportunity from KarlG Investment.
Blessings holds a Junior Certificate of Education and has spent most of her life dedicated to family and home. Like many women in Malawi, she longed for a way to contribute more meaningfully to her household income but did not know where to begin.
That changed when she encountered KarlG Investment, an initiative started by Carlo Gondwe to equip women and youth with practical, hands-on business skills using affordable, locally available materials.
Through KarlG, Blessings learned how to make dishwashing liquid, pine gel, and other household detergents, skills that were both new and exciting for her.
With encouragement and guidance, she began practicing what she had learned, producing her own brand of dishwash from home.
Three months down the line, Blessings has turned those lessons into a thriving small-scale business. She now makes detergent products from a scratch, packaging them neatly and selling them within her neighborhood and to a growing list of customers who place orders. Her working space may be small, but her vision is big.
She operates with consistency and care, sometimes working alone and other times with the help of others. For her, it is not only a way to earn money, but also source of pride and motivation.
A key influence in her journey was her daughter, who advised her to focus on what comes naturally, what is easy to manage and what she enjoys. That advice, though simple, became the turning point.
Blessings found that making detergents fit all three; it was something she enjoyed doing, could handle with ease and could grow into something bigger.
Her customers have taken notice too. One of them, Lydia Damson praised the products, saying they produce more foam, have a pleasant scent, and that the pine gel is effective.
It even kills cockroaches and insects. Feedback like this fuels Blessings’ confidence and reaffirms the quality of what she offers.
Today, her business is helping her support her family and her husband. She is able to contribute to household needs, easing the pressure on the family and adding financial stability.
For Blessings, this is more than just business. It is empowerment, independence and a chance to develop himself and others economically.
Currently, she sells her products by order. Word of mouth is her strongest marketing tool for now, but she has her eyes set on to open a shop.
Her dream is to have a small but well-stocked shop where she can sell her handmade products and also stock raw materials so others who want to make their own products can easily access what they need.
However, the road has not been without its bumps. Being new in the detergent industry has come with challenges. One of the biggest challenges is getting customers to trust and try her products.
Many people are used to commercial brands and convincing them to switch to a new, locally made product takes time and patience. But Blessings is not giving up. She sees every challenge as a lesson and every small success as motivation to push forward.
Despite being early in her business journey, she has already passed on her knowledge to two other people. She believes in sharing skills and uplifting others just as KarlG Investment did for her.
Training others gives her joy, knowing that she is not only growing her own business but also providing job opportunity.
What began as a simple skill has now become a source of empowerment and change. Blessings Maudzu Chapalapata’s story is a true reflection of how determination, learning and the courage to start can create a better future.
