Inspired by his former Ethiopian boss in South Africa, Mulamba started fish farming in 2020 and now owns four dams.

According to Mulamba fish farming journey has been good despite challenges, citing high cost of fish food has made the business to struggle sometimes but with his resourcefulness Mulamba now produces his organic fish food.

“I was inspired by my former boss and I decided to venture into fish farming. When I returned home, my farm produces a significant amount of fish and I make alot of profit ever since I started producing my own fish food,” he explained.

Mulamba’s fish farming business harvests fish twice a year and he sells them on both wholesale and retail to the community.

The business has created employment opportunities for three permanent staff, providing them with a stable source of income and training in aquaculture best practices. Mulamba’s venture promotes sustainable aquaculture practices.

According to Mulamba, he plans to expand his operations to increase production and creating more jobs.

“Fish farming has helped many farmers in our area to improve their livelihoods,” said Mulamba.

Both Andrew Chirwa, one the businessperson in the district and Peter Mwitha agricultural expert has hailed Mulamba’s fish farming venture.

“Many people doesn’t know that they can do fish farming business while in Nkhata Bay just because there is a lake there, but it seems Elias had bigger visions. Honestly I am really inspired and youth in his community should take him as role model,” explained Mwitha.
