Unima Student Develops Chatbot On Child Abuse

A University of Malawi student has created an innovative WhatsApp chatbot to help children report online abuse, providing a safe and confidential platform for young users to seek help.

Nathan Majawa, a Master of Arts in Media, Communication and Development student, developed the SafeChat Guardian chatbot to protect children aged 10-17 from online risks such as cyberbullying, sextortion, and exposure to harmful content.

“As a student of Media and Communication for Development, I wanted to use digital tools to create something practical and life-changing. This chatbot is designed to give children a voice and a safe space online,” said Majawa.

The chatbot, piloted in four Blantyre-based secondary schools, allows users to report harmful digital experiences and connects them to professional support from child protection officers or counselors.

Majawa’s project highlights the importance of digital solutions in protecting children from online abuse. By leveraging technology and promoting a safer online environment.

According to Majawa, The chatbot’s integration with YONECO’s child protection channels, ensures that users receive timely and effective support.

This innovative solution has the potential to make a significant impact in Malawi, where online safety is becoming increasingly important.

Beatrice Kaunda Primary school teacher Shining Hope Private Primary School in Mzuzu has hailed Majawa’s initiative and she has called Majawa to actualise it so that it can save many children in the country.

Majawa is a journalist and works for Malawi Communications and Regulatory Authority.
