Lilongwe-Based Youth Ventures Into Energy and Agriculture Entrepreneurship

A Lilongwe-based entrepreneur, Enock Palichina is on track to become one of the country’s leading youthful entrepreneurs launching a waste management business.

Through his company, Green Energy Innovations, Palichina is producing briquettes using sawdust, tree leaves and waste materials collected in Lilongwe City.

Palichina has also diversified his business by starting the production of a Bio-Fertilizer which is trading under the brand, “MbeuGro Liquid Fertilizer.

He said he launched his company in 2023 after noticing a lack of proper energy solutions available on the local market.

“After a careful market study, I noticed that a lot of Malawians, especially in the cities rely much on charcoal or wood for cooking and that was not right for me,” he said.

The 30 year-old innovator then launched briquettes production after learning about the trade from a friend.

“I realised that briquettes production is very easy and that’s why I ventured into it,” said Palichina.

In 2024, Palichina then decided to add a new product to his portfolio by launching production of MbeuGro Liquid Fertilizer.

“So, this liquid fertiliser is organic, which means it is produced using environmentally friendly raw materials, including urine and other materials that I cannot publicly disclose for trade reasons,” he added.

The fertilizer has already been tested in crop fields in the 2024/2025 growing season.

Through his venture, Palichina is able to support himself financially and has managed to employ one individual who helps with marketing the company’s products.

Palichina’s exploits have not gone unnoticed as earlier this year, the European Union in conjunction with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), trained him on how to develop professional packaging and branding through a project called Zantchito.
