The Chipala brothers are revolutionising Malawi’s agricultural landscape with their mega poultry farm, Chipala Poultry Farm.
This innovative farm has become a beacon of hope not only for the community but also the country as a whole on agricultural sector, showcasing the potential for private sector-led development.
“We started our poultry business in 2021 with a vision to contribute to Malawi’s food security and create employment opportunities for the youth, our inspiration came from seeing the potential for poultry farming to transform lives and stimulate economic growth in our communities,” said Mwachumu Chipala.
The farm boasts modern battery cage systems that improve egg production and quality. They are also setting up a 20-ton-per-day poultry feed mill to meet the demands of their farm and other customers. Additionally, they are utilising poultry manure as organic fertiliser to grow a variety of crop, including broccoli, spinach and lettuce.
According to Mwachumu, the farm has employed 144 permanent employees from surrounding communities, with top management consisting of young professionals between 20 and 25 years old. Their egg production has increased, with daily collections yielding approximately 352 trays of eggs. The farm has opened markets in Mozambique and Tanzania, where there is high demand.
“We are proud of what we have achieved so far, but we are not resting. We are planning to produce organic fertilizer from chicken waste, cooking oil from sunflowers, and increase vegetable production. Our goal is to make Chipala Poultry Farm a model for sustainable agriculture in Malawi,” said Chipala
With its innovative approach and commitment to quality, Chipala Poultry Farm has now over 82,000 birds.
One of the country’s agricultural expert Peter Mwitha said he is pleased that Mega Farms are coming into reality, saying this will boost the countries economy and food security
