Malawi’s Independence Day Celebrated with Pride in Germany

In a bid to promote unity and tourism, a group of Malawians living in Germany organised a special Independence Day celebrations on 6 July, where Malawian products were showcased to patrons.

The celebrations, organised by a grouping operating under the banner “Umodzi wa a Malawi in Germany” brought together Malawians living in Germany and German citizens who came to hear stories about Malawi and explore bilateral trade opportunities.

The grouping’s chairperson Alex Samba said the function presented an opportunity for malawians to celebrate independence day and share positives and negatives registered in the past 61 years of self-rule.

“The function became a hub of excitement and pride as participants shared stories about Malawi,” he said.

Samba said during the function, Malawians had an opportunity to sell Malawian products to dozens of German citizens who came to witness the occasion.

“It was a business and tourism showcase, connecting cultural heritage with international market potential,” said Samba.

Malawian products, including Coffee, Tea, Handwoven baskets, intricate curious (ziboliboli), Flavours of Kambuzi and Nali Chilli sauces were showcased, much to the delight of visitors.

“Diaspora participants passionately shared the stories behind each product, while German guests showed keen interest in bilateral trade opportunities and travelling to Malawi,” he added.

A book written by a Malawian-German family titled “Agogo and the Elephant” was also unveiled during the function.

The book is a go-to book for children’s stories and is available on Amazon in Chichewa, German and English languages.

On Sunday, 6 July, Malawi celebrated 61 years of self-rule under the theme “Restoring Broken Foundations; Taking Malawi Forward”.
