Malawians living in the United States of America held special celebrations to mark Malawi’s 61st Independence commemorations.
The celebrations, organised by an association of Malawians under the banner Malawi Dallas Fort Worth Association (MADFA), brought together dozens of the country’s citizens who held celebrations from Saturday 5 July to Sunday 6 July 2025.
MADFA Chairperson Kondwani Eastwood has indicated that the celebrations were organised to promote unity among Malawians living in diaspora.
“Indeed we held independence day celebrations to show that even though we are not currently in Malawi, everything happening there is of uttermost significance to us,” he said.
Among others, patrons at the two-day event had an opportunity to meet and greet while sharing positive stories about Malawi.
“On Saturday, 5 July, we had activities such as soccer, dinner and dance while on Sunday, 6 July, we danced to Malawi and African music, among others,” said Eastwood.
Participants at the event also had an opportunity to recognise Graduates from primary school to colleges.
“It was such a colourful event such that Malawians living in other parts of USA, including Texas joined us,” he added.
On Sunday, July 6, 2025, Malawi celebrated 61 years of self-rule under the theme “Restoring Broken Foundations; Taking Malawi Forward”.
In Malawi, celebrations marking the day were held at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe where activities such as cultural dances, speeches and a football match spiced up the day.
