Hikers Alliance Urges Malawians to Take Up Hiking

A group of local hikers operating under the banner “Hikers Alliance” has implored Malawians to take up hiking as a way to improve their physical fitness, promote overall well-being and promote tourism.

The group’s team leader Austin Mndolo made the appeal Sunday at Dzalanyama Forest Reserve in Lilongwe during a special hiking exercise organised by the group.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the event, Mndolo touted hiking as beneficial on both physical and mental health.

He said members, under the grouping, have so far benefited a lot from several hiking expeditions the group has been organising in the past.

“Hiking has helped us manage stress and depression while keeping us physically fit,” he said.

Mndolo added that hiking has also helped members to expand their social circles.

“It has really expanded our social circles as we connect with different people and of course it’s a good sport, simple, enjoyable and highly beneficial,” said Mndolo.

He then implored Malawians to embrace the activity, saying it is crucial in promoting tourism.

“Hiking is one way of appreciating nature, which is vital in tourism,” he added.

Meanwhile, the group has revealed that several hiking expeditions have been lined up with the next activity to be held at Mount Hora in Mzimba District soon.

One of the hikers, Valentine Zulanga expressed satisfaction with the experience she has gained through the activity.

“We had a chance to appreciate Dzalanyama Forest Reserve and appreciate its history,” she said.

The Dzalanyama expedition was sponsored by the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA), Emmanuel International and the Centre for Environmental Education and Communication (CEEC).
