Malawi, Colombia Sign MoU On Higher Education

Government of Malawi has entered into a new chapter of international academic cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Colombia aimed at strengthening collaboration in higher education.

The agreement was sealed during a bilateral meeting held on July 3 between Malawi’s Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Jessie Kabwila and Colombia’s Ambassador to Malawi, Maria del Rosario Mina-Rojas.

The MoU seeks to foster long-term partnerships between higher education institutions in the two countries, focusing on key areas such as research collaboration, innovation, quality assurance and broadening access to tertiary education.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Kabwila expressed Malawi’s commitment to building strong and sustainable ties with Colombia in a bid to advance the country’s higher education system.

She underscored the transformative role higher education plays in driving innovation, promoting inclusive development and addressing real-life challenges faced by society.

“This collaboration offers a great opportunity to build a future where our students and academic institutions are globally competitive. We believe that strengthening international linkages is key to promoting excellence in research and ensuring that our graduates are equipped with the skills needed in today’s dynamic world,” said Dr. Kabwila.

Ambassador Maria del Rosario Mina-Rojas echoed the enthusiasm for the new partnership, describing education as a strategic sector in Colombia’s foreign relations.

She emphasized Colombia’s willingness to work with Malawi to promote knowledge exchange and human capital development.

“We are looking forward to working together on meaningful programmes that benefit both countries, particularly in student and staff mobility, technical and vocational education and postgraduate training,” she said.

The Ambassador also introduced the Beca Colombia Scholarship Programme for Foreigners, a flagship initiative that supports international students to pursue higher education in Colombia. She encouraged Malawians to take advantage of the opportunity to enhance their academic and professional skills abroad.

As part of the next steps, both sides committed to developing a detailed framework for implementation of the MoU. This will include identifying priority institutions, defining areas of mutual interest and facilitating regular engagement between stakeholders.

The new partnership is expected to open doors for joint research projects, academic exchanges, and curriculum development aligned with global standards. It also demonstrates Malawi’s growing efforts to position herself as a serious player in the global academic landscape.

With this agreement, Malawi and Colombia have taken a bold step toward transforming higher education through international collaboration and mutual investment in the future of youth.
