Tabitha Receives Regional Award

Malawi’s women’s football star Tabitha Chawinga received the Regional Sport Awards Female Sportsperson of the Year during a the handover ceremony held on Thursday at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The France-based Malawi National Women’s Football Team captain won the award in May during an event in Harare, Zimbabwe but she did not attend due to her other commitments.

Minister of Youth and Sports Uchizi Mkandawire, who received the award on her behalf, commended Tabitha fir her outstanding and consistent representation for Malawi on global stage.

Malawi National Council of Sports board chairperson Dr Sunduzwayo Madise also applauded her through a Facebook post.

“The Minister of Youth and Sports today handed over the ward of Sportswoman of the year to Tabitha TC11 Chawinga. The Minister collected the award on her behalf at the Region Annual Sports Awards (RASA) gala held recently in Harare,” said Madise.

Tabitha also cherished the award she won by beating her rival Zambian footballer Barbara Banda who congratulated her, saying the Malawian deserved it.

Said Tabitha: “It is finally home; 2025 Regional Annual Sports Awards(RASA) Female Sportsperson of the Year trophy. Moses Misoya para-athlete, the Under-19 Malawi Cricket Women’s National Team and para-athlete female, Taonere Banda were other nominees.
