COSOMA’s Copyright Fund to Support Local Artists in International Market

The Copyright Fund under the Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) says it will now focus on promoting the country’s art industry on the international stage to boost income for local artists.

Copyright Fund chairperson Robert Kapyepye has made the remarks as the fund is in the process of putting in place strategies to boost income for the arts sector.

Kapyepye said, among others, the fund wants to explore thematic approach capable of changing perception of international art enthusiasts towards the country’s arts sector.

“So, among others, we will soon release a call for proposals from local artists asking them to submit plans that can help take local art on the international market,” he said.

Kapyepye said the fund is ready to invest in proposals that can quickly change the plight of the local art industry.

“We believe our artists are now ready to sell their products on the international stage and we are here to help in achieving that,” said Kapyepye.

He said, once the Copyright Fund releases the next call for proposals, those operating in the copyright and creative sector should apply.

“We are specifically urging eligible people, including Malawians, an incorporated company or an organisation duly registered under the laws of Malawi, to submit proposals,” he added.

Patwell Phiri, Poetry Association of Malawi (PAM) chairperson responsible for the central region of Malawi has since expressed interest to apply, saying poets in the country are eager to start exporting their art.

“I believe the poetry industry should be among the art industries that should strive for growth on the international stage and for that reason, we are going to participate in the process,” said Phiri.
