Former president JB boosts Ntopwa’s COSAFA tourney bid

Malawi’s COSAFA Women’s Football Champions League tournament representative Ntopwa Super Queens have secured air tickets from former Malawi President Joyce Banda to travel to the competition.

Owner and technical Director for the club Isaac Jomo Osman said the team is now prepared for the tournament.

He said: “We are delighted to announce that we have now secured air tickets for the players, money for accommodation and transporting players from Johannesburg to Durban where the tournament will be held.

“Let me also thank former president Joyce Banda and people of goodwill, who are coming forward with their support.”

Jomo told ProjectM that the team still needs a lot of support from companies, organisations and well-wishers to participate in the championship.

The Blantyre-based Ntopwa Super Queens qualified for the tournament after winning the 2022 FAM women championship following a dramatic 5-3 post-match penalty shoot out victory over Ascent Academy at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre recently.

Ntopwa, popularly known as Ama Ghetto Kids, will be the first Malawian women football club to participate in CAF Women’s Champions league having successfully passed the club licensing requirements in June this year.

Meanwhile, Ntopwa Super Queens have been drawn in group A of CAF Women’s Champions League alongside defending champions Green Buffaloes of Zambia, Double Action Ladies from Botswana and Lesotho Defence Force.

The Council of Southern Africa football Association (COSAFA) conducted the draw in Johannesburg, South Africa on Thursday for the third edition of the regional qualifier which will be held from August 30 to September 8, 2023 in Durban South Africa.

The winner will represent the COSAFA region at the continental finals in Ivory coast later this year in group B.
