Neno District Hospital High Dependency Unit Facility Opens

Critically ill patients in Neno will no longer have to endure long trips to distant hospitals for emergency treatment, thanks to a newly constructed High Dependency Unit (HDU) at Neno District Hospital by Partners In Health (PIH).

The K452 million facility, funded by the WYSS Medical Foundation through PIH, is fitted with modern medical equipment, including oxygen support systems, monitoring machines, and specialised beds and is set to serve vulnerable patients such as pregnant women, children, and those with chronic illnesses.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, PIH Executive Director, Basimenye Nhlema said the facility will help patients get care closer home.

Nhlema said: “This is a major step in strengthening emergency response in the district where patients used to be referred to distant facilities for intensive monitoring. It is also a promise that no patient in Neno has to die waiting for care.”

Neno District Director of Health and Social Welfare Services, Dr. Enock Ndarama said the unit will help save lives and improve local healthcare.

Neno District Council Chairperson Councillor Joseph Chiphaliwali praised the development, saying it is good for both patients and medical staff because emergencies can now be managed at district level.
