Malawi’s theatre scene is set for a major shake-up as Mwezi Arts launches its debut international festival, the Theatre Renaissance Cabaret (TRC) scheduled for July 21 27 in Lilongwe.
The festival, which will be held at Madsoc Theatre in Area 2 and Kumbali Castle, promises to gather theatre practitioners from across the globe, including Canada, Brazil, Nigeria, South Africa, Israel, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
“We are excited to bring together diverse theatre voices to share stories, ideas and cultures,” said TRC Executive and Creative Director, Stanley Mambo. “TRC will be a refreshing climax to our Madsoc events and offer Malawian audiences something beyond borders.”
Marking Mwezi Arts’ 25th anniversary, TRC fulfills the organisation’s dream of hosting its own structured festival. Since it was formed in 2000 by Malawian director and actor Stanley Malizani Mambo, Mwezi Arts has championed theatre across Malawi and Southern Africa.
He said: “This festival is more than performances. It’s a grassroots platform for collaboration and growth. We want to spark lasting connections among global theatre communities.”
With international interest already flowing in, TRC is poised to become a landmark event in Malawi’s arts calendar.
