Malawi Tourism Council, MMCT Partner to Mulanje Mountain Conservation

The Malawi Tourism Council (MTC) and the Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust (MMTC) have signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) aimed at promoting collaboration in the protection of Mulanje Mountain.

The MOU, signed on Saturday, also seeks to promote sustainable tourism practices, support conservation efforts and protect biodiversity, just to mention a few.

MTC executive director, Memory Momba Kamthunzi has described the signing of the MOU as a milestone for the country’s tourism sector.

“This partnership has been designed to promote the conservation of one of Malawi’s iconic natural landmarks, Mulanje mountain, while enhancing visitor experiences through eco-tourism initiatives and responsible tourism practices,” she said.

Kamthunzi added that the signing of the MOU will go a long way towards creating opportunities and transforming how the world experiences the “Warm Heart of Africa”.

“This agreement will definitely help in preserving the mountain’s unique ecosystem, thereby enhancing visitors’ experience,” said Kamthunzi.

On his part, MMCT executive director, who is also a renowned conservationist, Carl Bruessow hailed the signing of the MOU, calling it the beginning of a long journey towards sustainable tourism development.

“As MMCT, we are thrilled and ready to work with our partners in ensuring that Mulanje mountain retains its status as one of the country’s leading tourism sites,” said Bruessow.

The mountain, located a few kilometers from Blantyre city, is known locally as the ‘island in the sky’ because it rises almost sheer from the plains below, which have an average altitude of just 650m.

the mountain is also home to one of the country’s unique trees, Mulanje cider, which is one of most sought after trees in the world due to its durability.
