Rabecca Lita Chisels Her Mark in Carpentry

At just 21-years old, Rabecca Lita is challenging gender norms in Malawi’s male-dominated carpentry industry.

Raised by a single mother, Rabecca is the second-born in her family and has faced financial struggles, but her determination to succeed keeps her going.

Initially, she set her sights on plumbing, but when circumstances led her to carpentry, she embraced it wholeheartedly.

“I didn’t have any experience when I started, but I’m learning little by little. The biggest challenge is the lack of school resources, since my mother can’t afford everything I need. But she’s trying her best and I’m really grateful.”

Now known as the “Female Carpenter,” Rabecca is gaining hands-on experience and recognition in the field.

She has worked on wardrobes at Area 30 and is currently doing ceiling installations at Gouji Dream Town.

“I find carpentry fun, especially when making coffins,” she joked, showing her positive spirit.

Her hard work isn’t going unnoticed. One of her clients, Elisha Nkhoma, said he was impressed with her work

“I was really pleased with the job she did for me. I encourage her to continue working hard.”

Her instructor, Chrispine Chinthunzi, also had inspiring words: “She’ is courageous when doing classwork and often leads group activities.

“However, personal family issues may affect her performance if she doesn’t receive full support.”

Support is also coming from outside the classroom. Fanny Mhango, a facilitator at the Malawi Girl Guides Association, applauded Rabecca’s efforts, saying: “Girls who step into male-dominated fields are the strongest. Rebecca will go far, and we hope more girls are inspired to follow in her footsteps.”

Despite the obstacles, Rabecca’s vision remains clear.

“One day, I want to own a workshop and train other young women. Women can be carpenters too. What a man can do, a woman can do even better,” she said confidently.

Her advice to other young women is powerful: “Follow your heart and ignore negative advice. If you want to do something, go for it. Carpentry isn’t just for men. Women can shine too.”

With every nail hammered and project completed, Rabecca Lita is not only building furniture but also a legacy and inspiring a new generation of female carpenters in Malawi.
