In a world where women are marginised in vocational professions, Teleza Mwayi Nangoma has defied the odds, proving that passion and perseverance can spark powerful change.
Teleza, an electrical and solar expert, has spent 12 years building her career, marked by determination, hard work and resilience.
Watching, an electrician, Mr Kayange, sparked her interest in electrical engineering. She approached a private electrical school, and despite financial struggles, the owner, Mr. Chilimba, agreed to teach her. “I wouldn’t have made it this far without his help. God bless him,” she said.
Teleza gained hands-on experience working with seasoned electricians and contractors, contributing to major projects such as the Nkhata Bay District Hospital.
Her impressive qualifications include a Grade 1 in Electrical Engineering and a Certificate in Renewable Energy. She has wired over 50 houses and installed numerous solar systems.
One of her customers, Tamara Gausi, praised her professionalism and quality work. “I can choose her over and over again because she does quality work.”
Despite her success, Teleza faces challenges such as a lack of professional connections and unwanted advances.
“The biggest challenges I face are lack of professional connections and the constant sexual advances from male colleagues and clients,” she said.
Teleza remains committed, training and mentoring young men who assist her with her work. Her dream is to become a full-fledged contractor, leading her own team and creating opportunities for others.
“I want to create opportunities not only for myself but for others who are passionate and willing to learn,” she said.
Fanny Mhango, Facilitator at Malawi Girl Guides Association, commends Teleza, saying she is doing what most young women are afraid to do.
Chilimba praised her hard work and determination, saying: “Teleza was a hardworking woman, passionate to overcome all obstacles to achieve her goals despite the financial situation at her home.”
