Malawi Netball Star Bounces Back to Action

Malawian netballer Mwawi Kumwenda-Mbwana based in Australia bounced back to action after eight months maternity leave when she made a debut for new club West Coast Fever.

But it was not a debut to remember for the former Melbourne Vixens shooter as her new club started the 2025 Suncorn Super Netball season with a 49-67 loss to NSW Swifts who are Round One leaders with 4 points due to their superior goal difference.

Mwawi was introduced in the third quarter of the match and made a first time impression by taking a super shot after coming on.

The Malawian netball star took the social media to celebrate her return.

“I am super excited to have returned to top-form netball. Although our recent results were not what we hoped for, I am grateful for the opportunity that West Coast Fever gave me to keep playing and looking forward to our next match. Happy to Wear the West Coast Fever #130,” she said.

A report on the team’s website stated that Mwawi made her West Coast Fever debut in front of ecstatic 8355 fans and quickly followed her entrance with a super shot.

West Coast Fever are bottom of the eight-team table with no point while NSW Swifts lead with four points, her former Club Melbourne Vixens also started on poor note with a 53-66 loss and are second from bottom.

West Coast Fever’s next match in Round Two is on Saturday against fourth-placed Queensland Fire Birds who beat fifth-positioned GWS Giants.

This is the second time for Mwawi to return after a long lay off as it also took her eight months to return after an ankle injury four years ago.
