Organic Farming Boosts Farmer’s Yields

Organic farming techniques have boosted a Mzimba smallholder farmer to triple his crop yields, setting a shining example for other farmers in the region.

The 33-year-old farmer, Blessings Nkhata, switched to organic farming methods three years ago, after struggling with low yields and soil degradation using other farming practices.

“I was using a lot of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, but my soil was getting weaker and my yields were declining. I decided to try organic farming and the results have been amazing,” explained Nkhata.

Nkhata’s farm now uses natural methods to control pests and diseases, and he has implemented crop rotation and composting to improve soil fertility.

He grows a variety of crops, including maize, soybeans, and groundnuts. He also has fruit trees like apples and pineapple all of which have seen significant yield increase since he adopted organic farming methods.

“My yields have tripled since I started using organic methods and my soil is healthier and more fertile than ever before,” said Nkhata.

The success of Nkhata’s organic farming methods has also been noted by his customers, who appreciate the taste and quality of his produce.

“I have been buying produce from Blessings’ farm for a year now and I can really see the difference. It’s made to my family’s health, eating organic food is crucial for our well-being as it reduces our exposure to harmful chemicals and pesticides. I am grateful to have access to fresh, organic produce from Blessings’ farm,” said Malita Longwe a regular customer.

Nkhata’s success has inspired other farmers in the region to adopt organic farming practices and he has become a leader in promoting sustainable agriculture in Malawi.

As demand for his produce continues to grow, Nkhata is planning to expand his farm and hire more workers from his community.

Looking ahead, Nkhata aims to establish a network of organic farmers across Malawi, providing training and support to help others adopt sustainable farming practices.

“My goal is to make organic farming the norm in Malawi, and to ensure that all Malawians have access to healthy, chemical-free food, I believe that by working together, we can create a more sustainable food system and a healthier future for our communities,” said Nkhata.
