Tabitha Inspires Lyon to Bayern in Champions League

Malawian women’s football star Tabitha Chawinga inspired Olympic Lyonnais to a 2-0victory over hosts Bayern Munich in the Women’s Champions League first leg quarter-finals.

She capitalised on a Linda Sembrant defender to make a solo effort to put her team in the lead in the 35th minute.

Melchie Dumornay a Hatian forward capped a dominant display of the visitors with the second goal in the 65th minute which proved decisive as Lyon took a 2-0 advantage over Bayern ahead of the second leg on March 26.

According to the BBC, Bayern should thank their goalkeeper Malia Grohs who put up a superb display to ensure that the visitors were unable to boost their lead before break.

Lyon’s dominant display was underlined by 19 shots, 10 of which on target while Bayern had 12 shots and just one on target.

Lyon also had a 55 percent ball possession against 45 with 486 passes while the hosts had 398.

BBC also gave prominence to the Malawian by using her picture on the story.

Reads the report in part: “Goals from Tabitha Chawinga and Melchie Dumornay gave Lyon a valuable win at Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Women’s Champions League quarter-final.

“Chawinga took full advantage of a mistake from home defender Linda Sembrant to race through on goal and find the right corner midway through the first half.”

The victory boost Tabitha’s chance of winning the Champions League as the French champions lost in the semi-finals last year.

In another match, Real overcame Arsenal Women at home to take a 2-0 advantage away at Emirates Stadium.
