The Catholic Development Commission (CADECOM) of the Chikwawa Diocese has planted 4,000 NEEM trees at St. Peter-Nyamikuta Primary School in an effort to conserve the environment in Nsanje district.
Bishop Peter Musikuwa for the diocese led the tree planting exercise at the institution.
He said the trees requires to be looked after as parents does to their children.
Bishop Musikuwa told ProjectM that it will be a wastage of resources and time if the trees do not survive.
“Iam urging all learners, teachers and parents to take care of the trees,” he said.
Assistant Forestry Officer for Nsanje, Andrew Bazilio has urged other churches in the country to emulate the good gesture of the catholic church in planting trees.
He has since called upon all the communities around the area and the district to plant more trees during this year’s tree planting season saying trees play a vital role in our communities.
“Let us make use of the rainfall by planting more trees this tree planting period and also care for them to survive,” he said.
A learner at the school, Anderson Divala said he is pleased to have participated in the tree planting season.
” I will take care of my four trees which I have planted and make sure that they grow well before I complete my standard 8 in three years to come,” said the leaner.
