Alice Bula, a 25-year-old social worker, is making waves in the agricultural sector with her thriving white onion farming business in Dowa district.
Bula’s farm has not only provided her with a source of income but also created employment opportunities for others. She has employed five people, who assist her in managing the farm and selling the onions.
“I am proud to be contributing to the economic growth of my community,my farm has become a source of employment for young people in the area, and I am committed to expanding my business to create more jobs,” said Bula.
Bula’s onions are both sold on local and national levels, her success has caught the attention of agricultural experts, who are impressed by her dedication and hard work.
“Alice is a shining example of what can be achieved through hard work and determination, her farm is well-managed, and she has adopted good agricultural practices that have enabled her to produce high-quality onions,” said Peter Mwitha, an agricultural expert.
Mwitha added that Bula’s success is a testament to the potential of agriculture to create employment and stimulate economic growth.
“Agriculture is the backbone of Malawi’s economy and entrepreneurs such as Alice are crucial to the sector’s growth, encourage other young people to follow in her footsteps and explore opportunities in agriculture,” said Mwitha.
Bula has set ambitious goals for her business, aiming to increase her production capacity and expand her market reach.
She plans to establish a processing plant to add value to her onions and create more employment opportunities.
“In the next five years, I want to be one of the largest onion producers in Malawi. I also want to establish a training program for young farmers, particularly women, to equip them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in agriculture.” Bula said.
