Government has challenged youths in the country to be valuable assets towards achieving aspirations as outlined in the Malawi 2063 Vision.
Deputy Minister of Education, Nancy Chaola Mdooka expressed the sentiments during the launch of the National Population Policy which, among others, incorporated the National Youth Council of Malawi.
The Deputy Minister alluded that the 2018 population census revealed that Malawi’s population is youthful with a median age of 17 and the annual growth rate of 2.6%.
She added that with the youth exceeding the figures, there is a need for them to become valuable assets by being active in entrepreneurship and innovation, among others, apart from seeking employment.
“It is aspiring and motivating observing that youths in the country are now taking heed in creating innovative ideas that are putting Malawi on the international map. Malawi could, therefore, harness the productivity of the youth to increase positive economic impact for more prosperous future,” said Mdooko.
According to the Deputy Minister, the National Policy, which aims at addressing rapid population growth, will assist the country to achieve the economic indicators.
In her remarks, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Demography (Population Studies) Monica Chamali Phiri highlighted that the academia has a role influence policy makers to be implementing policies that are crucial in developing the lives of youths.
