Malawi National Women’s Football Team will face Angola in the 26 Morocco Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) second round of the qualifiers.
This follows Angola’s 5-4 victory on penalty shoot-out after an aggregage 3-3 draw in two legs.
The teams used home-ground with Angola beating Zimbabwe 2-1 at home and lost by the same margin away.
It was a painful loss for Zimbabwe who took a 2-0 lead at half-time recess but Angola fought hard to equalise and forced the match into penalty shoot-outs.
Reacting the development, Malawi National Football Team coach Lovemore Fazili said it would be a tricky match considering that Zimbabwe were favourites to progress to the second round.
“It is a tricky fixture match, especially since many expected Zimbabwe to progress. We need to plan well, continue playing friendly matches and analyse Angola’s style of play. I will do my best to assess their strengths and weaknesses,” he said.
Fazili said facing Angolan in a crucial qualifier would inspire the Scorchers to make history by qualifying.
“It is a big motivation because after so many years, Malawi has never competed in WAFCON qualifiers. We will try as much as possible to have a very strong team to compete with Angola and qualify,” he said.
Malawi were given a lifeline after DRC pulled out in the first round.
During the FIFA window, Malawi played against Zambia in Lusaka where they lost 2-0 in the first match and won 3-2 in the second match.
