Malawi Scorch Zambia’s Copper Queens

Malawi National Women’s Football Team survived the scare to beat Zambia’s Copper Queens 3-2 in a friendly match played in Lusaka, Zambia on Tuesday.

The result was a sweet revenge on the hosts who beat Malawi 2-0 on Sunday in the replayed first match. The first match was postponed after 30 minutes following a downpour.

Malawi succumbed to an early goal when US-based Rachael Kundananji scored in the sixth minute.

But the Scorchers recovered in the second half to score three goals within a space of 12 minutes.

France-based forward Rose Kabzere equalised in the 48th minute, before Faith Chimzumu shot the Scorchers in the lead 10 minutes later. Sabina Thom cushioned Malawi’s lead in the 60th minute.

Zambia’s attempt to come back into the game got a boost in the 80th minute when Rachael Nachula reduced the arrears after Malawi’s sloppy defending conceded the soft goal.

Nine added on minutes due to lengthy stoppage after clash of heads by Zambian players who were substituted did not do any harm to Malawi as they registered an important victory over their experienced counterparts.

Malawi missed vice-captain Temwa Chawinga but her sister Tabitha, who captained the team, had a quiet game although she assisted the second goal.
