Nsanje district based progressive farmer, Mazoe Bingala Charlie has managed to turn his 1.5 acre land into a thriving farmland that has in turn changed his economic status.
Charlie, based in the area of Traditional Authority Malemia manages a diverse garden, producing maize, beans, tomatoes, cabbages and onions.
Despite the fact that the farmland is relatively small, last year alone, Charlie managed to harvest 6,000 drums of cabbage, earning him an impressive K4.5 million.
Asked on how he managed to achieve the feet, he told ProjectM that the key to his triumph lied in seeking expert advice.
“I sought the support of agricultural extension services which equipped me with knowledge on effective land preparation required to harvest more,” Charlie said.
Optimizing the knowledge he gained from agricultural extension services, Charlie decided to diversify by venturing into animal husbandry.
“Earlier this year, I used part of the profit I got last year to buy a calf and 3 goats,” said Charlie.
He said his knowledge and skills are paying off as he is now able to support his family comfortably.
“Its a huge relief as I am now able to pay school fees for my children who are in secondary school as well as university,” He said.
Agricultural expert and Executive Director of Farmers Voice Africa (FAVOA), Jeremoti Zakaria has commended Charlie for implementing what he was taught.
“Charlie sought advice from us as FAVOA and am glad he is doing better,” Zakaria said.
Going forward, Charlie plans to expand his venture by acquiring extra land for commercial use.
