What started as a backyard poultry project has grown into a thriving business for Styness Phiri, a determined farmer from Area 25C.
Phiri ventured into poultry in September 2023 with just 40 Kuroiler chickens. Despite financial struggles in purchasing feed and vaccines, she refused to give up.
Today, she has expanded to seven well-maintained kholas and now specialises in rare breeds like Brahma and Koekoek chickens, which she supplies to customers across Malawi.
“At first, I borrowed incubators, but now I have my own, which has helped my business grow,” she said.
Her chickens start hatching within five months, allowing her to generate income quickly from meat and egg sales.
Phiri’s commitment to quality and customer service has won her loyal clients, including Stella Chilingulo from Zomba, who praised her care and dedication.
“She encouraged me from the start and took great care of the chicks. I feel valued as a customer,” said Chilingulo.
Despite challenges such as high feed costs and poultry diseases, Phiri remains determined to expand. She credits the Women and Poultry WhatsApp group for valuable knowledge and support.
“I want to be the go-to supplier for unique breeds in Malawi,” she said.
Her journey from financial struggles to a profitable business is an inspiration to aspiring farmers, proving that perseverance and innovation can lead to success in agriculture.
