Mzuzu Airport to Resume Operation Next Month

Mzuzu airport is set to resume its commercial flights beginning from March 2025, 14 years after suspending operations, authorities have confirmed.

Disclosing this, Minister of tourism Vera Kamtukule says, the resumption marks a significant step towards re-establishing a critical connection between Malawi and other countries.

Kamtukule further said the airline could boost Malawi’s economy, thereby positioning the country as a major player in international business and tourism.

She added: “With direct flights to and from Mzuzu, travelers may now easily visit tourist attractions.
We are trying to create an effective schedule, which is ideal for both businesses and leisure.

“Upon its re-opening for flights, the airport is fully prepared to welcome passengers and our government is working hard behind the scenes to gear our operations for this much anticipated route launch to Mzuzu.”

Minister of public works and transport Jacob Hara said the runway and expansion project at the Mzuzu Airport which is close to completion is set to position Malawi as a vital gateway for new economic opportunities.

Hara said the maintenance works at the airport will extend the runway from 1,300 meters to 1,600 meters, enabling larger aircraft to land.

“This initiative will benefit the local community by creating jobs, boosting businesses in tourism hospitality and local trade. By offering reliable and efficient transportation services, we aim to enhance the country’s air transport sector and elevate regional economic integration across Africa,” said Hara.

According to him, government has taken this approach to support both domestic and international flights operations.

Businessperson Victoria Mwafulirwa, who is based in Karonga, welcomed the move with a post on her Facebook Page, saying it will ease mobility.

Meanwhile, Malawi Airlines have given the greenlight to start flights as soon as the runway works are completed.
