Malawi Women Join Historic 108-Nation Space Tech Initiative

Several women in Malawi have been granted an opportunity to further advance their knowledge in space technology following the launch of a special program called Space Tech program.

Space Tech program is a historic 108-nation initiative that will provide participants with 120 hours of space technology training.

12,000 participants have been selected to undergo training in the first phase of the initiative’s implementation with 108 candidates expected to advance to the next phase.

Malawi’s co-ambassador for the initiative, Kumbutso Takomana has hailed the initiative, saying it will provide a platform for Malawian women to showcase progress made in space technology.

“Being part of this project definitely showcases how far our nation has progressed in STEM education,” Takomana said.

Through the initiative, participants from developing nations will be taught on how they can collaborate to increase space exploration.

“Its an opportunity to also learn from the best when it comes to space exploration which is relatively in its infancy stage in most developing countries,” said Takomana.

Meanwhile, Director of science, technology and innovation in the ministry of education, Chomora Mikeka has implored the country’s women to use the opportunity diligently.

“We also want to take this opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to bridging the gender gap in space technology,” said Mikeka.

Virtual trainings marking the beginning of the initiative have been launched last week by the ShakthiSAT, an Indian special mission to educate and empower 10800 girls globally for a lunar satellite exploration.
