Over 21,000 people across five districts in Malawi can now access safe water, thanks to the installation of solar-powered water supply systems by the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA).
The initiative, funded by over USD 1.2 million from the African Development Bank under the Post Cyclone Idai and Kenneth Emergency Recovery and Resilience Project, has brought relief to communities in Mulanje, Phalombe, Zomba, Chikwawa, and Nsanje.
Speaking during a media visit to Mulanje and Phalombe, Reverend Moses Chimphepo, DoDMA’s Director of Disaster Response and Recovery, highlighted the project’s goal of ensuring access to safe water, reducing the reliance on unsafe sources.
In Mulanje, Blessings Mikeyasi, Chairperson of Kamwendo Water Users Association, expressed gratitude, noting the shift from using salty, undrinkable water to clean, safe supplies.
This life-changing development underscores the resilience and recovery efforts aimed at improving the livelihoods of cyclone-affected communities.
