A 26-year-old computer science student at DMI Hastings Khomo has developed a mobile app called ‘Happy Mind’ to provide critical support to individuals facing mental health challenges.
“The application uses the mobile camera to predict the facial expressions of individuals, judging how best to assist them,” he said.
The app features a navigation map to nearby hospitals, calming audio recordings and a digital diary for users to express their emotions.
“For self-improvement, the Happy Mind concept has got audios that one can listen to, to calm the mind, as well as a diary meant to write what is on their mind,” Khomo added.
DMI-St. John the Baptist University senior ICT lecturer Joel Davies Mulepa praised the initiative.
“The initiative is an accelerated integrated model that offers tools and resources aimed at promoting emotional well-being,” Mulepa said.
Khomo plans to launch the app in January, aiming to support individuals aged 18 and above, particularly those struggling with mental health issues.
With mental health challenges on the rise globally, digital innovations like ‘Happy Mind’ can play a crucial role in supplementing traditional treatments.
