Nurses Body Plants 50 Trees to Support Cyclone Freddy Survivors in Mulanje

The National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives in Malawi (NONM) has taken a step towards environmental conservation by planting 50 trees around Namwino Village in Mulanje District on December 7 2024.

Namwino Village, home to six houses constructed by NONM for survivors of Cyclone Freddy, is set to benefit from this initiative aimed at protecting the area from destructive winds and improving air quality.

NONM President Shouts Simeza highlighted the dual purpose of the trees, stating they will safeguard the houses from future storms while providing clean oxygen for the community.

Group Village Head Nogwe expressed gratitude for the initiative and pledged to care for the trees.

“Our area was severely affected by the cyclone due to environmental degradation caused by human activities in the Mulanje Mountain Landscape. We must protect and nurture these trees to prevent future disasters,” he said.

This initiative underscores the importance of environmental restoration in enhancing community resilience to climate change impacts.
