Silver Strikers ended Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ late charge to win the TNM Super League after a 1-0 victory at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.
Silver needed just a draw to win the title and end an 11-year title drought, but put the icing on the cake by collecting three points.
The goal also came from an unlikely source as left-back McDonald Lameck’s 53rd minute goal sealed the Nomads fate and took the Bankers to the Promised Land.
With the victory Silver will have an unassailable points tally of 64 points while Wanderers’ maximum tally will take them to 61.
Silver plotted the move to win the league title when they poached former Flames and FCB captain Peter Mponda to coach the team.
The tactician, who was Bullets coach Kallisto Pasuwa’s assistant at the People’s Team, was roped after a stint at South Africa’s Black Leopards, his former.
In an interview, Mponda said they deserved to be the champions because they were consistent, especially in the first round.
“Today, it is a historical day for us. I was demanded from the players and they have done the job. They have delivered,” he said.
On the other hand, Wanderers caretaker coach Bobby Mpinganjira, who stepped in to replace Meck Mwase, was at a loss for words.
“We wasted a lot of chances, but congratulations to Silver Strikers for doing,” said the soft-spoken coach.
Silver wraps up the campaign against Fomo FC on December 4 and Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos on the last day of the season while Wanderers face Creck Sporting Club on December 4 before and Moyale Barracks on December 7.
Silver’s Lameck was also named Player of the Match.
