ORGANISATION USES SPORTS TO BOOST MENTAL WELL-BEING

In a bid to promote mental health awareness and physical fitness among young people, Lilongwe-based organisation, My Community My Responsibility has teamed up with the Lilongwe District Handball Committee to launch the “Let’s Play Handball” initiative.

The innovative project aims to educate students in Lilongwe about the importance of mental health and physical fitness through the sport of handball.

My Community My Responsibility executive director Brian Khembo has told ProjectM in an interview that by leveraging the impact of handball, the initiative hopes to reach a wider audience and inspire positive change.

“As an organization, we are thrilled to partner with the Lilongwe District Handball Committee to bring this important initiative to the youth of Lilongwe,” he said.

Khembo said through the “Let’s Play Handball” initiative, students from at least ten schools across Lilongwe city will have the opportunity to learn about mental health issues such as stress, anxiety and depression.

“The initiative will also provide a platform for students to engage in physical activity, promoting overall fitness and well-being,” he said.

Thousands of students from Lilongwe city are set to benefit from the initiative, with plans to expand its reach to other schools across the district.

Meanwhile, sports analyst and mental health expert who has vast experience in children affairs, Rabson Woodwell has commended My Community My Responsibility for coming up with the initiative.

“By combining sports, education and community engagement, My Community My Responsibility and the Lilongwe District Handball Committee are scoring a major goal for mental health awareness and physical fitness in Lilongwe,” he said.

Events marking the launch of the initiative will be held on the 30th of November 2024 at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
