MALAWI POLICE SERVICE TAKES STRONG STANCE AGAINST GIRLCHILD ABUSERS

Commissioner of Police for South East Region Chikondi Chingaza has emphasized the importance of safeguarding the girls rights and future during the International Day of the Girl Child commemoration in Mulanje district.

She said it is heartbreaking that girls are still the victims of violence in their societies despite the government’s efforts to end the malpractice.

Chingaza told ProjectM that girls and parents should report any form of abuse that girls face so that they get the help they require.

“All the communities have a role to play to assist girls realize their dreams hence the need to safeguard the girls at all costs so that they get educated and achieve what they want to be in their life,” said the Commissioner.

Earlier Plan International Programs Manager for Mulanje, Mcduff Kathumba said they want to give chances to girls so that they can also achieve their ambitions.

He said his organisation will continue to empower the girl child by supporting them in terms of education among others.

” We want girls to be the agents of change and we have programs where we are helping girls without leaving boys behind with tertiary support to continue their education and achieve their goals,” he said.

One of the learners at Providence Boarding Primary School, Devine Chana advised her fellow girls that they should focus on school so that they can achieve what they want to achieve their goals.

“We should all set girls in our lives and strive to get them. We should refuse early marriages and work on education,” she said.

This year’s International Day of a Girl Child was commemorated under the theme” Girls Vision for Future.”
