YOUTH ORGANISATION INTRODUCES PAPER BAGS

Mzimba Youth Organization Pioneers Sustainable Solution to Plastic Waste

In an effort to tackle the plastic waste crisis, Mzimba Youth Organisation (MYO) has introduced eco-friendly paper carrier bags.

According to Anthony Botha, Programs Manager at MYO, the organisation aims at replacing the use of thin plastic carrier bags with biodegradable paper bags.

“We are using old charts, calendars and newspapers to create these portable bags, which can decompose with minimal impact on the environment,” Botha explained.

The paper bags are not only eco-friendly but also serve as a raw material for briquette making once used which enhances waste management.

Although MYO has not yet established a market for the paper bags, they are currently conducting research to support the adoption of this innovative solution.

As a youth-led organisation, MYO is committed to promoting education empowerment, youth and women’s participation in politics and governance, environmental management, climate change resilience, land rights advocacy, sexual reproductive health rights among others.

Meanwhile, environmental activist Chidombe Msisya, has commended MYO’s initiative saying it should be a wake up call to all Malawians.

“The use of biodegradable paper bags is a step in the right direction towards reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainability. It’s essential that we support and replicate such innovative solutions to address the plastic waste menace in Malawi,” explained Chidombe
