It’s an era for the Malawi National Football team’s strikers, as the Chawinga sisters, Tabitha and Temwa have been nominated for the 2024 Confederation of African Football (CAF) awards.
CAF has nominated the Malawian sisters as top 10 best players ranging from world-class footballers plying their their trade both on the continent as well abroad.
Tabitha Chawinga plays for Lyonnais and has been making waves with her impressive performance.
Currently, playing for Lyonnais Olympique, she has 6 goals and 4 assists in 10 games she has played for her club.
Before joining her current club, Tabitha played for Paris Saint Germain (PSG) where she made history by becoming the first African woman to win France’s National Professional Footballers of the year award in the women’s category after scoring 18 goals and 10 assists.
Of recent achievements, is also the Balon d’Or where she was also placed number 16 as the world’s best player among 30 nominees.
In another thrilling development, she was also nominated for the best 20 soccer players in the women’s category in the 2024 Beyond Development Dubai Globe Soccer Awards.
Temwa Chawinga, on the other hand, is another force to reckon with, especially after being crowned the golden boot winner for the season after netting 20 goals in 25 games played, the most by any player in the 2024 NWSL season. She has also been ranked joint third for her 6 assists this season.
Temwa Chawinga became the first Malawian and African player to win a golden boot for her US-based club, Kansas City Current.
She is also the first African to record highest number of goals in a single season after beating Australian Samantha Kerr’s record of 2019, the first ever female player to score 19 goals in a single season.
Temwa has also finished the National Women’s Soccer League as one of the top 3 players in the best 11 players category for the season that has just ended.
Speaking with ProjectM in an interview, Lustica Gondwe, Malawi National Women’s Football team, General Secretary hailed the Chawinga sisters for their success.
“I must applaud these two, through their work Malawi is being recognised globally. To our up-and-coming stars, this is something you ought to emulate as these are role models,” she said.
The two deadly strickers have been nominated alongside Barbara Banda and Rachel Kunadanji of Zambia and current holder Asisat Oshoala is not on the list.
