FEMALE ENTREPRENUER DEFY ODDS, CREATES SUSTAINABLE FARMING EMPIRE

Amid rising number of unemployment rate, a Lilongwe based female entrepreneur, Chifundo Lupiya is upsetting the odds by creating numerous jobs through sustainable farming.

Lupiya has so far created over 32 employment opportunities for individuals who work in her farms operating under the brand “Mthuso farms”.

Mthuso farms are strategically located in Nalikule and Chileka in Lilongwe, as well as Mchinji district.

Lupiya’s farms have become major suppliers of farm produce including Maize, Bananas and vegetables such as carrots, onions and tomatoes, just to mention a few.

Her wish to see Malawi develop economically is said to have pushed her to open the farms.

“I have always wanted Malawi to develop and start exporting more Agricultural related produce, and that’s why I opened this venture,” Lupiya said.

Launched few years ago, Mthuso farms has grown into multimillion enterprise, supplying tonnes of fresh food both locally and internationally.

“We are also supplying vegetables in several countries across the SADC region, something Malawians need to take seriously as it brings in forex,” said Lupiya.

Out of the 32 employees, 12 are working at Nalikule farm, 7 at Chileka and 15 at the Mchinji farm.

Lupiya’s vision is to see Mthuso farms thrive into a major exporting business, helping the country rake in millions in forex.

Women rights activist and entreprenuer, Akuzike Kaulimbo has hailed Lupiya for thriving in what she has described as a male dominated business.

“Large scale farming in Malawi is mostly synonimus with men and seeing women killing it is something special,” said Kaulimbo.
