FLAMES AIM FOR FIRST AFCON QUALIFIER

Malawi National Football Team is out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Morocco after a terrible campaign, but face Burkina Faso on Monday with pride at stake.

Malawi anchor Group L with just a point having lost twice to Senegal, once to Burkina Faso and Burundi and earned a point away to Burundi.

Flames interim coaching panel led by Zimbabwean FCB Nyasa Bullets coach Kallisto Pasuwa said the goalless draw against Burundi in Ivory Coast in Thursday last week was a confidence booster.

With a new look Flames team comprising South Africa-based prolific striker Gabadinho Mhango, Charles Petri, Denis Chembezi, Richard Mbulu, Yango Singo, MacDonald Lameck, who were largely ignored by Pasuwa’s predecessor, have a point to prove,

“Said Pasuwa: “The result brings confidence to the boys who played. With the result, we cain raise our heads up and soldier on. It is a good result considering that we didn’t train with of the guys.
Malawi returned from Ivory Coast on Saturday ahead of the match.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya said he expects the team to well.

“All the best to the Flames as they take on Burkina Faso today in the 2025 AFCON qualifier at the Bingu National Stadium. Play your hearts out boys and make the nation proud,” he said.
