Freelance journalist Annes Mwale has emerged as the national winner in the Print Category of the 2024 Open Forum on Agriculture Biotechnology (OFAB) Malawi Media Awards.
Mwale, who was also the only female winner, was recognized for her groundbreaking article on how the pricing of genetically modified (GM) maize seeds of which government of Malawi is yet to venture in, could impact economically disadvantaged farmers.
The article, published on Zodiak Online in August, marked her first foray into science writing.
The awards, announced on November 15 in Salima, celebrate excellence in science journalism, with a focus on agricultural biotechnology.
Mwale expressed her joy, saying: “This is my first time writing a science article and winning has shown me the value of bridging media and society through impactful stories.”
In the same category, Leonard Masauli was named runner-up.
Meanwhile, in the Radio Category, Lois Khama Majamanda of Chisomo Community Radio emerged victorious, with Evance Matola of Mzati Radio taking second place.
Organized by the National Commission for Science and Technology, the OFAB Malawi Media Awards aim at promoting professional science reporting. Winners in both categories received monetary rewards as part of their recognition.
