MALAWI REMEMBERS WORLD WAR VETERANS

President Larazus Chakwera on Sunday lead the nation in remembering the soldiers who died in the two World Wars fought in 1914-18 and 1939-45 respectively.

The main remembrance ceremony was held at the Zomba Memorial Tower in the old Capital City of Zomba.

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Major Kelvin Mlelemba said the day was set aside to appreciate the crucial role Malawian soldiers contributed in the duo wars.

Mlelemba told ProjectM that the Remembrance Day is meant to remember the great contribution Malawian warriors made in the World Wars.

“Remembrance Day also known as ‘Poppy Day’ is celebrated globally on 11 November marking the end of the Second World War,” he said.

According to the PRO, this year’s Remembrance Day marked the 106th Remembrance Sunday.

First to lay wreath was President Lazarus Chakwera. Veteran Warrant Officer Class One Frank Masiano laid wreath on the behalf of all war veterans while Tanzanian Ambassador to Malawi, Agness Kayola laid wreath on behalf of all the Diplomatic Corps.

Similar ceremonies were held in Lilongwe and Mzuzu.
